Today is (according to the weatherman) the final day of Indian Summer here in my parts. We have taken advantage of it by doing our read-aloud time (currently Watership Down) at the picnic table after lunch, soaking up some sun, and listening to the migrating flocks.

Mr Music had an outing today with Devastatingly Handsome to a big college football game (their team won!). These things are always partly about the food. Mr Music feasted on pizza and half of the world's largest doughnut. So, tonight as I was going down the hall after tucking him in, I hear, "Mom, guess what?"

"What?"

"When I burp, my breath smells like doughnuts."

Mothers of girls only have no idea what they are missing.

More About Jamestown

Some sort of alien activity has taken over Mr Music's brain since last year and for the first time ever, he can complete a math lesson in an almost reasonable amount of time. I appreciate the fact that this is saving me from wanting to pull my hairs out one by one as I try not to just tell him the answers and he appreciates the fact that this allows him that commodity known as Play Time.

Yesterday and today he zoomed through school and had enough Play Time to use it to recreate the events at Jamestown. Here is the part I loved: he built the three walls so he could slide them out of the way for school today. We tried to remember what military commander it was who took in forts and bridges partially assembled, the modular approach. Can you help us out?

For some reason, I prefer this picture with Mount Dog Food in the background. Maybe the settlers would have fared better with a really tall watch tower.

I also want to add, in case you are interested in Mr Music stories, that tonight's shower was event packed. First, he came down wrapped in his towel to tell me there was "a daddy long leg kind of a spider in the shower and it went under the water but only for a few seconds but it seems to have fainted, and would (I) come check on if it's OK or not." I checked on said spider, removed it to the window sill to recover or not, and have not heard any more about it. Then, at the end of his shower, he came down again wrapped in his towel, to announce that all of a sudden the water started turning red. Seems he had a sudden nosebleed.

Life with a boy is just too exciting.

Jamestown Failure Explained

This week in history we are talking about the 1607 colony in Jamestown. We read the facts about there being 120 (all male) colonists and only 40 of them surviving the first year.

Mr Music, in some mix of sexism and understanding reality, said, "Of course - they were all men. There was no one to take care of them or clean their clothes."

Here is how I know I am old: I find myself wondering what the world is coming to.

I had a sudden stroke of wondering What the World is Coming To when I saw an ad in the coupon flier from Pur water filters about "Bottle Your Own Water" to save up to $600.00 a year.

I am all in favor of saving up to $600.00 a year (or even more- why not bottle our bath water, too, and really up the savings?) but I was pretty concerned that the people at Pur think we need a tutorial on how to bottle our own water. I am not kidding. The tutorial is here, in case you are not sure how to do it.

And if I have just helped you save lots of money, please send it to World Vision for their dig a well in Africa program. They need water money more than we do.
